Blogging vs. Facebook/Twitter

New studies have shown that blogging is becoming a thing of the past, as more internet users prefer to use online social networking systems as they’re quicker and less lengthy. Well, at least some youths think so.

The youth can be considered fickle-minded and religious trend-followers. You could say that blogging was at its peak five years ago. But there’s been recent fallout as Facebook and Twitter seems to be conquering the hot seat of today’s teenagers. This is obviously reflective of the new generation of internet users: we want things fast and easy.

You can see it from the obvious switch from Blogger and Xanga, to Facebook and Twitter. These social networking sites provide the same services: they work to broadcast news and the current affairs of the user. Except blogging is a long, meticulous process of writing and creating an interesting story, whereas “tweeting” and “updating your status” are complete no-brainers with a straight forward message.

It’s not to say that everyone’s given up on blogging. Some people still prefer to blog. They don’t make it into a daily ritual but highlight important events that took place in their week or even fortnight (the duration of time and frequency varies, I’m just stating examples). Not everyone needs to know what they’re doing or where they are every step of the way.

Still, opening up to the world and giving out this “private information” isn’t all that safe anymore (not that it ever was or ever will be). More and more people are pouring into the internet. Blogs, which were once seen as sanctuaries for people to express their feelings have now been invaded and can land the user into unnecessary trouble.

There’s no real conclusion to this debate. The need to keep updated and be informed has evolved and is still evolving. There will never be a domineering platform for social networking. It’s all honestly up to an individual’s taste and preference. Whether you prefer to stick to old school blogging or move into the new trend of tweeting, it’s all the same: you’re still ever slightly narcissistic and you want your peeps to keep up with your life.
