Tired of going through the same old storyline in Sleeping Beauty? Well, why not spice it up with a tinge of black humour instead!
Directed by Nicky Phelan, Granny O' Grimm's version of this classic fairytale is not like what you have in mind. Twisted between the genres of comedy and satire, the plot focuses on Granny O' Grimm, an old lady who turned this popular fable into her own as she intergrates her personal narrative while telling it to her aghast granddaughter.
The fact that this short film is infused with black comedy makes it engaging to watch. Maybe this is my kind of humour but I do find it enthralling whenever fairytales like these are given a modern twist. Aside from that, I also like the fact that this story portrays how society is really like in the real world, where they do judge you based on your physical appearance whether you like it or not. Furthermore, the use of vibrant colours brewed together with the upheaval of 3D and 2D animation adds on to its intriguing factor.
Despite all that, this story closed on a low note. The ending was too abrupt in the sense that the audience only have a certain amount of time to inhale Granny O' Grimm's boil of emotions before it was over. The healthy pace of the climax they built as the story unfolds was destroyed with a hasty end.
Overall, this short film is definitely something you won't want to miss. How could you resist watching a crazy old granny terrifying her granddaughter with a contemporary revelation of a classic fairytale?
